How To Program the BMW Key Fob

Step-By-Step Instructions

Programming the keyless entry on your BMW key fob is a hassle-free procedure and one that many Staten Island drivers will find simple to complete. There are two basic methods; one when you already have a working key but need to program extra keys, and the other is when you are starting from scratch without a working key. If you have been wondering how to reset a BMW key, the experts at BMW of Brooklyn have you covered.

Programming a New BMW Key from The Start

The following instructions are for programming a new key when you don’t have one that works.

  1. Insert key into the ignition and turn it to position 1 and back rapidly 5 times.
  2. Remove the key.
  3. Hold the unlock button and press the BMW logo 3 times, then release the unlock button.
  4. If you have additional keys you want to program, repeat step 3 within 30 seconds from the original key programming.
  5. Turn on the ignition to complete the process.

Programming More Than One BMW Key Fob

If you have a BMW key fob that works, but you want to program additional keys, follow these steps:

  1. Take the working BMW key fob along with the ones you want to program inside the car with all doors and windows closed.
  2. Put the key into the ignition and turn to position 1. The dash lights and accessories should turn on.
  3. Turn the key back and remove it.
  4. On the working key, hold down the unlock button and press the lock button (the BMW logo) 3 times, then release the unlock button. The doors will then automatically lock and unlock.
  5. Take the new key and hold down the unlock button while pressing the BMW logo 3 times, then release the unlock button. The doors should lock and unlock, and you are done.

BMW Key Battery Replacement

What if the culprit is a dead BMW key battery? No worries! It is easy to swap out the old battery for a new BMW key fob replacement battery.

  1. In many cases, you will need to remove the metal key from the BMW key fob. The key inside the fob can then be used to open the battery case.
  2. The battery should be located under the back cover, so it should be removed.
  3. Once the back cover is removed, the battery should lift out easily.
  4. Gently put the BMW battery in place. Do not force the battery to fit.
  5. Close the key fob cover.

If the key needs to once again sync up to the vehicle, you can use the BMW key fob programming steps above. If the fob will not pair with the car during BMW key programming, you may need a BMW key replacement fob.
