What is BMW xDrive?

White BMW X5

Brooklyn drivers who are on the market for a new BMW vehicle have probably come across the words “BMW xDrive” and wondered what makes this all-wheel drive system distinct from others, or from front- and rear- wheel drive systems. Learn about this signature system with BMW of Brooklyn!

XDrive: BMW AWD

Snow on Staten Island roads or rain on the highways near Manhattan require traction to keep you in control and safe. xDrive is an all-wheel drive system, so, like many others, it sends power to the front and rear of the vehicle to help with traction. In the past, BMW models used to coordinate this through viscous couplings with fluids, but now xDrive uses an electronically-actuated clutch-pack differential. The BMW xdrive is controlled by two sophisticated technologies:

  • Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) is an electronic sensor system that monitors your wheels and stops them from spinning. It also detects if the car is going in a direction that you aren’t steering (this is called oversteer or understeer).
  • Dynamic Performance Control (DPC) is added to some BMW models. In lieu of putting the brakes on spinning wheels, this technology prevents oversteer/understeer by sending engine power to the individual rear wheel that needs it in the moment.

The technologies in the xDrive make this drivetrain a fully variable system, meaning that it has the capacity to send almost the entirety of the vehicle’s power to a single axle. The BMW XDrive senses loss of traction and makes this transfer almost instantaneously.

BMW offers xDrive on almost all of its models, so Queens buyers won’t have to sacrifice performance for other BMW features they want. BMW xDrive is:
